People gathered in a large number to take a dip in MahakumbhMela and get free from the cycle of sin and virtuous deeds, life, and death. The first ShahiSnan (Royal Dip) is on 14th January, the occasion of MakarSakranti, continued till the last ShahiSnan on 27th April, which will mark the end of MahakumbhMela 2021.
The ritual of Kumbh Mela is mesmerizing as well as spiritual. It is actually a meeting of common thinking, of mystical minds. It brings men of the same thoughts together. Even UNESCO declared Kumbh Mela as a Cultural Heritage and included it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List in December 2017.
The festival is celebrated on the sites of four sacred rivers, namely,
- At Haridwar on the Ganges
- At Nashik on the Godavari
- At Prayag on the Confluence of the Ganges, the Jamuna (Yamuna) and the Saraswati
- At Ujjain on the Shipra
The celebration is based on the astrological position of Surya (The Sun), Chandra (The Moon), and Brahspati (The Jupiter). It is said that when these three are fully occupied then that is the moment of holiest time and we celebrate Mahakumbh. Mahakumbh is celebrated every 12 years in each location. Haridwar and Prayag also celebrate ArdhKumbh every 6 years, in each location.
Why Mahakumbh is Celebrated?
You might be wondering the reason behind celebrating the largest spiritual festival of Mahakumbh with great zeal and enthusiasm. It is obvious to think so. Here, we will present to you the reason for celebrating Mahakumbh.
Let’s go back to the time of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). It was the time when Devas (Lords) and Asuras (Demons) want Amrit (Nectar) from the ocean and finally, when the pot of nectar occurred, both starts fighting over this. In between the tugging of the Kumbh (pot), some Amrit (nectar) spilled over 4 places, namely Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The fight was continued for 12 days long, believed to as long as 12 years. From then on, Kumbh Mela is celebrated in these 4 places.
